A Householder Spreads the Energy Saving Message!

An audit by EAA on one household in Italy highlighted the heating of domestic hot water as having the best potential for energy savings. The current hot water system was heated by electricity and was very inefficient. As there was no possibility of switching to a non-electrical energy source, EAA advised the householder to replace the current boiler with a newer, more efficient and smaller model. This advice was acted upon and the householder is saving an estimated 200 kWh per year.

Furthermore, EAA advised the householder that if all families in the building decided to upgrade the central heating system to a more efficient system, substantial energy savings could be made. With the continued support from EAA, the householder felt confident enough to convince the other families that this was a positive and worthwhile idea. All the families have now agreed to go ahead with this improvement and the planned installation date will be next year. The new heating system which has a much higher efficiency also uses a less polluting fuel.

The participant household, keen to reduce their energy consumption as much as possible, has also replaced their fridge with an A+ rated model, replaced light bulbs with low energy alternatives and reduced standby losses on electrical appliances by installing plugs with separate switches.

In total, the household has reduced the CO2 emissions associated with energy use by 0.23 tonnes per year.
