Property gets an Energy Makeover!

A householder in Shrewsbury joined the Eco n'Home project shortly after moving into their new house. Keen on reducing their impact on the environment, the householder was quite shocked to learn how inefficient the house was in terms of energy consumption. After an initial audit and the continued support of MEA, the householder managed to install a number of measures which transformed the property. The first steps the householder took were simple measures; replacing all light bulbs with low energy bulbs and ensuring that appliances were only ever switched on when in use. It was then decided to tackle the very old and inefficient heating system; the 30 year old standard boiler was replaced with an efficient, condensing model and a full set of heating controls was also installed, including a programmable room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves. Inefficient sash windows were then replaced with efficient double glazing units and finally the householder switched their electricity to a green tariff in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to a minimum. These measures combined with the good behavioural practices, in relation with past owners, has transformed the energy efficiency of this house. This is good news for the environment and additionally the householder who has cut their energy bills by almost half. Furthermore, the householder plans to improve the thermal qualities of the house by increasing the loft insulation thickness of 150mm to 270mm in the coming months.
