Even in an Old House!

Households living in older properties commonly have a higher energy demand than the same family living in a newer, more efficient home. As part of Eco n’Home, EAA in Turin, Italy has been working with one family living in such a property and with whom they first had contact to assist with energy efficiency measures.

Having had the work completed, the family was keen to understand the impact of their actions. Despite their best efforts (e.g. no use of private car) the age of the house meant that consumption in winter was very high and expensive. Floor insulation in 2006 helped reduce costs and significantly improved comfort.

The audit by EAA found that the renovation work to the floor reduced energy consumption by around 20% from previous levels. Further opportunities were also identified such as the replacement of glazing and a more efficient heating system however economics mean these will not be undertaken during the Eco n'Home period.

The family has continued their effort to reduce their carbon impact from electricity such as by installing safety switches at all plug points and 90% appliances being low energy. Stand-by consumption was under the common average. To maximise savings EAA also installed a water flow reduction kit to all taps.
