A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash
A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash is a documentary about the frighteningly central role of oil in our lives. Rather than rely on fiction, the film contains interviews with notable academics, experts and advisors from across the political, corporate and economic spectrum. The global energy crisis is a constant feature on news bulletins and newspapers; however, this film makes you think much deeper, as it delves into our dependency on all things oil, and examines how our work, leisure and play time will be affected when the oil runs out.
Leicester City Council, with support from the European Commission’s Eco n’ Home project, hosted two free showings of A Crude Awakening at the Phoenix cinema in Leicester. These took place on the 11th and 25th September 2008 and were attended by over 300 local authority officers, members of the public and businesses. Attendees were provided with delegate packs containing information on a range of local initiatives, including energy efficiency grant schemes and local food markets. Local companies and voluntary groups had displays.
The event was accompanied by an exhibition of electric vehicles and bikes, showcasing how travel choices can become more sustainable. Leicester City Council’s cycling officer was also present to inform attendees about local transport schemes including Leicester’s Bike Park and free cycle training sessions available for both children and adults.
